Pelvic Pain Treatment Crofton, MD | Physical Therapy for Pelvic Pain

When it comes to living with Pelvic Pain, everybody we see wants to know:

"Why do I have this awful, unrelenting Pelvic Pain?"

or

“Why Am I Still Suffering with difficulty sitting, painful sex, challenges to empty my bladder and bowels After Dealing With It For 6 Months OR much longer??

Most people hope that when they have pelvic pain, vaginal pain, pain their tailbone, pain with sitting (especially hard surfaces), pain with intercourse, bladder spasms and more that it will simply go away on its own in time.

That one morning they will wake up and “magically” it will disappear ... But then 6 months later you begin to realize that you are still living every day with the inability to sit or drive due to the pain, unable to engage in sexual activities because of pain and are not able to exercise the way that you want to because pain is holding you back and even worse than when it started.

Does that sound Like You?

Does it seem like no one is really listening to you and dismisses you? Everyone tells you that “it’s just a fact of life as you get older or after having children”. Did you go to the Doctors’ about your pelvic floor pain, painful sex and the Doctor tells you to rest and “try these painkillers” and “see how it goes”?

Have you noticed that stress worsens your pain, or wiping yourself after going to bathroom makes things worse, that you have skin irritation in that area and wearing tight clothing makes things worse too? Is your relationship negatively affected with your significant other because of the inability to be intimate at all? Are you unable to get on the floor with your kids and play due to the pain in your pelvic floor or tailbone? Are you mentally exhausted from feeling your pelvic pain that is wearing on you daily to the point of affecting your overall happiness? We hear these reports every day at our Physical Therapy office.

Then, often 6 weeks later, they end up going back to the Doctor again because it hasn’t gotten any better. Worse, they’re often given yet another prescription of even stronger pills and advised “that your pain is all made up and to just relax” so that things will get better.

We also see quite often in our office that patients go to see the Doctor for their pelvic floor pain and dysfunction to be diagnosed with:

Pudendal neuralgia, Pudendal nerve pain, painful bladder, interstitial cystitis, bladder spasms, rectal spasms, painful sex, pain during sex, vaginal pain in older women, vaginal pain in younger women, pelvic floor dysfunction, bladder spasms, vulvodynia treatment, vaginismus and more…

Who are told to do kegels without any guidance and offered varying surgeries without trying anything else first (kegels are NOT for everyone all the time and you should stop immediately if they are causing pain)?

Has that Ever happened to you?

Have you been told different things, by different people about what the problem is or how to solve it? Maybe you think you have a problem in your abdomen- but it’s your pelvic floor where the problem is originating? It’s a very confusing part of the body to work out where the issue is coming from because there are so many muscles that all work so closely together. And when you start to have back pain, hip pain, abdominal pain and more ALONG with your pelvic floor dysfunctions, it can become extremely confusing to figure out what problem to even start with to get better! Also getting information from many different sources often leads people to procrastinate and put off deciding what to do to help fix their Pelvic Floor Dysfunction.

What’s WORSE, many people just end up accepting it as ‘part of life’ - as if it’s normal, as if it “has” to be that way as we get older, have children, go through menopause and more. In fact, this is probably the same thing that some of your friends and family told you…“it’s just what happens as we age”. Pelvic Floor Pain, Vaginal Pain, Pudendal Neuralgia, Pudendal Nerve Pain, Interstitial Cystitis, Bladder Pain and Pain with Intercourse may be COMMON, but it is NOT normal!

Is This How You Feel?

If you’re currently living with Pelvic Floor Pain of any type, here’s 7 more reasons why it could be lasting longer than it should:

  • 1. You thought it would go away on its own - but it didn’t
  • 2. You went to the Doctor who told you to relax and take medications- but the pills did nothing to help, and as soon as they wore off, the pelvic floor problems returned again
  • 3. A family member, or friend, told you that everybody gets Pelvic Floor Pain and Dysfunction at some point in their life and especially with aging, so you just accepted it
  • 4. You sought help from other Healthcare Professionals or a Physical Therapist in the past, but nothing they said or did seemed to help
  • 5. You started modifying workouts (taking out cycling and deep squats) to reduce the pain and are sitting on a cushion, but nothing is providing lasting relief of your pelvic floor, vaginal and rectal pain
  • 6. You tried different positions with intercourse, tried relaxing and using more lubrication…but it still very painful to be intimate
  • 7. You have been doing a million kegels a day and your pain is getting worse (stop right now until you talk to a pelvic floor physical therapist)

The next thing people ask us all the time is this:

What can I do to get rid Of Pelvic Floor Pain, Vaginal Pain, Bladder Spasms, Pain with Intercourse and More ?...

Well, here's 4 things you can do:

  • 1. First off and the most important, you need to make a decision about getting help. I can’t even count the number of people that have told me how long they procrastinated about seeking help, thinking that their pelvic floor pain will ‘just go away with time’ and the pain that they experience with sex will get better, only to still be suffering 6 months down the line, still dealing with it, and nothing’s changed…Or it gets worse.
  • 2. Next, do the RIGHT exercises - one of the best things to help you ease your Pelvic Floor Pain is to do the correct series of progressed exercises - the right exercises given to you by a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist will allow you reduce your pelvic pain and dysfunction to make intimacy more enjoyable, increase your ability to sit, be able to start wearing a tampon without discomfort and improve your ability to empty your bladder and bowels without pain or challenges - and make sure that you get to the root of what’s causing the problem, so that it won’t come back anytime soon.
  • 3. Start deep, diaphragmatic breathing to help relax your pelvic floor muscles and reduce tension – this is one of the first exercises that we use with our patients to help them let the pelvic floor muscles go and decrease tightness in the entire pelvis and body! Put your hands on your belly and take a deep breath breathing your air down into your stomach (your belly should rise) and then relax as your belly lowers. Complete this 5 times and it’s easiest to start with while lying on your back to feel the movement of your stomach. As you get better at this, you can try diaphragmatic breathing in sitting or standing about 3 times throughout your day to help de-stress!
  • 4. Get real, “hands-on” Physical Therapy – Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy is proven to help people with pelvic floor dysfunction, vaginal pain, pudendal neuralgia, pudendal nerve pain, interstitial cystitis, bladder spasms, rectal spasms, vulvodynia treatment, vaginismus, painful sex, pelvic pain and more. In fact, at Breakaway Physical Therapy it’s one of the most common injuries we see. If your pelvic floor pain is affecting your job and ability to sit, your ability to be intimate with your significant other, if it threatens your independence or gets in the way of spending quality time with family and friends – Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy can help get you back to living the life you deserve as quickly as possible!

Every single day I was waking up with the pain. I figured the more I moved the better but the second I sat down, it was terrible and I didn't want to get on the floor and play with my daughter. It was affecting my life to a point where I couldn't stop thinking about the pain.

As a mom you can't say, oh, I'm in pain. You can't take a day off. Coming to Breakaway made a huge difference in my life. The pain is still there, but it's not as sharp as it used to be before. It's much better now. There's still a long way to go but I definitely see results

Physical therapy has made a huge difference in a positive way. I'm now able to be intimate with my husband. I am regaining bowel control. The best thing about coming for physical therapy at breakaway is just the people here, they're so accommodating, so friendly and wonderful.
