What Happens When You Are in Pelvic Pain and Continue to Sit All the Time?

The muscles that connect your pelvis together (the ones that you sit on) are the muscles responsible for helping people to empty their bladder, easily empty their bowels, have sexual intercourse and support your pelvis, back and abdominals.

What happens when we constantly sit on these muscles and add a lot of stress to our bodies… you get some really tight pelvic floor muscles. When these tissues tighten, it puts pressure on all the nerves in the area and worsens your symptoms.

Then we start to shift in our seats, cross our legs and sit in weird positions that worsens our pelvic pain in the end and puts more pressure on our back.

Also STRESS is a real thing that affects our bodies and causes our muscles to tighten up, especially in the pelvic floor (and the neck muscles commonly). Most people have never thought about their pelvic floor muscles being tight or “checked in” to see what they are feeling like throughout the day.

When the pelvic floor muscles tighten in response to stress and when we are unaware of this, it’s really hard to get your pain to stop or even reduce.

To make it worse, then our butt muscles tighten leading up into the lower back and sometimes in the abdominals too! Then you have a LOT of tight muscles around the entire pelvis that will cause even more pain in your back, hips, abdominals and more.

Shaina is the founder and owner of Breakaway Physical Therapy.  She received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Maryland Baltimore, along with a Bachelor's degree from Towson University.   Shaina is an Ironman triathlete, with a love of all sports. Exercise is her passion, which plays an important role in both her personal and professional life.  In her free time, Shaina enjoys spending time with her husband and three young children.  Shaina's love of snowboarding led her to her career choice many years ago.
